About Us

Along with the superb loving care our rescues receive, we are dedicated to the defense of equines worldwide, working on behalf of PMU mares, slaughter-bound horses, wild horses, and the all-too-common backyard abuse cases. To this end, we strive to alleviate the suffering of horses by educating the general public via direct mail outreach, legislative endeavors, and editorial campaigns.

Our “staff” is a totally volunteer enterprise.

Laura Moretti, Founder & Executive Director
Laura Moretti has been involved in animal protection for more than 30 years — first as an undercover anti-cruelty investigator for state humane societies, and then as an editor and designer of numerous animal defense newsletters and magazines, most notably the award-winning, international animal protection publication, The Animals Voice Magazine (which she also founded). She is currently the founder/editor/designer of the award-winning animal defense web site, The Animals Voice, and is an author and editor of several animal defense books. Laura has also been published in Horse & Rider.

She is also the past Vice Presidents of Return to Freedom: The American Wild Horse Sanctuary, and the National Wild Horse Rescue & Sanctuary, which oversaw the rescue capture of 236 wild horses from the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge in southeastern Oregon. Laura’s story wouldn’t be complete without mentioning that she was the person chosen by Shilo to be an ambassador on behalf of equines worldwide (see About Shilo).
