Our Ranch

The ground for Shilo's Inn was purchased in the summer of 2002 in the heart of northern California's almond and walnut farmland. The property that boasts Shilo's Inn was once a thriving almond orchard and its ground is rich in life-growing nutrients — making great pasture for our rescued horses.

We first began preparing Shilo's Inn by flattening the land, and then constructing three-rail wooden fences, three winter-proofed stalls (pictured below) with large paddocks (to house Shilo and his long-time companion, Dakota), and an open stall for our very first rescue.

Over the winter, we upgraded our existing facility with additional fence and cross-fences, hay storage sheds, a fully stocked tack room, and began planting red oaks and plum trees. Grass sprouted in the spring, inspiring us to paint the fences (a chore unto itself!) and to rescue our first horse, Tony!

But then summer arrived, parching the ground once more, and requiring that we install pasture irrigation in order to keep our horses in the lap of luxury to which they'd grown accustomed.

We constructed a spacious barn, complete with quarantine and grooming / medicating stalls, an indoor tack room, and space for more horses yet awaiting rescue. With the addition of our existing three paddock stalls and five pastures, we are ready to salvage more horses.

We still hope to build a training ring and acquire more shade trees. Check out our Wish List; perhaps there are things you can contribute to make our project all the more efficient and viable.
